What is Curandismo?
An Introduction to Curanderismo for Therapists
This is a holistic, traditional Latin American healing system blending Indigenous, Spanish, Catholic, and African beliefs, using herbs, massage, prayer, and spiritual rituals to treat physical, emotional, and spiritual ailments by restoring harmony between self, community, and nature, often addressing culturally specific issues. Practitioners, called curanderos (male) or curanderas (female), focus on whole-person wellness, integrating remedies like plants and energy work with faith to heal imbalances, sometimes supplementing modern medicine.

Guided by a respected Mayan Shaman healer and supported by ceremonial experiences rooted in Indigenous wisdom, you’ll be introduced to healing practices that go beyond the Western model. Through this unique experience, you'll discover perspectives that honor the deeper aspects of healing—not just the psyche—of the clients we serve, and perhaps even parts of yourself you didn’t know needed tending.

"Curandera/o" (Spanish for female/Male healer) reflects both the spiritual and healing aspects of the practice. It carries the confidentiality and sacred trust associated with a cura (priest or minister), while also referring to one who cures.

Seasoned curanderas/os with decades of experience, traditional Mayan Shamans integrates traditional Indigenous healing with contemporary wellness approaches. They generally advocate for a thoughtful, complementary relationship between Indigenous medicine and conventional (allopathic) healthcare. Rather than an either/or model, they educates healthcare providers on Mexican Indigenous healing practices to foster culturally responsive care. Our guest presenter, Local Shaman Fini, supports the inclusion of cultural practitioners—curanderas/os and Native healers—as part of a multidisciplinary treatment approach that addresses the whole person: body, mind, emotions, relationships, and spirit.

Each practitioner’s path is unique, often shaped by family, elders, or specific tribal teachings.

In Mexican-American communities, curanderas/os are often respected elders known by word of mouth for their healing gifts, which may include herbal knowledge, spiritual insight, and intuitive abilities. Typically, they are long-time residents of their neighborhood and are known by word of mouth for their particular healing specialty.

This isn’t about becoming a Curandero or appropriating Indigenous methods. It’s about allowing yourself to receive—to remember what healing can be when it is soulful, embodied, and connected to something greater.

You’ll also have plenty of time for rest, ocean swims, fresh food, and connection with other therapists. Think of this as a vacation for your spirit—a chance to reignite your passion for the work by stepping outside the box and into a deeper kind of knowing.

Whether you integrate aspects of Curanderismo into your practice, or simply let the experience recalibrate your nervous system and renew your sense of purpose, you'll leave this gathering fuller, softer, and more whole.

Come early. Stay late. We invite you to remain on the island to witness and honor Día de Muertos, one of Mexico’s most powerful and sacred celebrations of life, memory, and spirit. There is no better time to reflect on healing, connection, and what it means to be fully alive.

Isla Mujeres is SUPER EASY to get to!
It's an easy flight into the Cancun Airport, a shuttle will pick up you up and take you right to the Ferry, and the Ferry is about a 15-20 minute ride from Cancun. US Dollars Accepted
Recommended to get Pesos (Your money will go further)
Best Exchange Rate is on the island through the bank ATM's.

Cancun International Airport (CUN)
Cancun is an International Airport that has direct and indirect flights in and out daily. Many of the affordable airlines such as Southwest and JetBlue also fly directly the Cancun now from many airports around the USA.
There are NO vaccination requirements to get in or out of Mexico. Pre-book your roundtrip shuttle/Ferry service.

It is important to notate, when you arrive to the airport, to get to your shuttle, you will go out of the airport exit and down a long walkway that has an overhang that will take you to a big outdoor meeting area (where there's some fun airport tourist bars) where the main shuttle pickups are. Do not let other shuttle services stop you along the way and try to poach your business from the shuttle you already paid for. The instructions will be on your receipt from the airport shuttle service.

Airport Shuttle & Ferry
To/From: Puerto Juarez
Taxi from Ferry to the Mia
Book your shuttle to take you to the Ultramar Ferry Port called Puerto Juarez. From the airport, the airport shuttle will take you directly to the Ultramar Ferry Port Puerto Juarez, and the shuttle service will hand you your Ferry Ticket.

Once you arrive on the island, either walk across the street to the golf cart rental and get your golf cart, or take a taxi to the hotel, it's a very short ride that costs about $13.

Getting Around the Island
People get around the island on Golf Carts. They are affordable to rent and you can rent them by the day or for multiple days at a time during the entirety of your stay. We recommend renting them for the entire time you're on the island so you can explore all around the island before and after the rental places close, which is usually 5pm. There is a golf cart rental place directly across the walkway from the Ferry.
You will need to renting a golf cart for some of the excursions around the island during Summer Camp. You can also rent an oversized golf cart and split the cost with other camp members. Once you get to your hotel, you'll want to be able to explore the island and it is easiest on the golf cart. There are also several vendors on the island on North Beach that you can rent your golf cart from. Ciros is our favorite rental place, and the most affordable we've found for multi day rentals.

Recommended Attire
Here are some recommended attire and products you will want to consider having for your trip! Wear your Summer Camp T-shirt and bathing suit & beach attire! November is the end of Hurricane season and can be a bit cooler. If you get cold easily, consider bringing a light sweater for windy days if you're driving around in your golf cart.

This island is relatively active with lots of walking and some optional rock climbing if you choose to go exploring. Activity level can range from relaxing in the ocean to moderate or very active if you choose to participate in additional excursions.

Sunscreen & Bug Repellent.
Mineral Sunscreen and any kind of
Mosquito Repellent
There are mosquitos on some parts of the Island. Also recommended to buy mineral sun screen as some of the beaches require organic mineral sunscreen to protect the coral reefs and wildlife.

Travel Umbrella
Travel Umbrella for Rainy Mornings
November in the Carribean is the end of hurricane season and can experience passing storms for brief periods throughout the day. It's smart to pack a light travel umbrella just in case it starts raining while you're out exploring the island. While the day time is still warm and humid, November is also a little cooler on the island when the rain comes in, so I recommend bringing a light sweater just in case for those that get cold easily. You may not need it, but it's always wise to have one just in case.
